What’s Paonia Reading?
Escape the holiday meltdown and winter doldrums with a good book! The Blue Sage Center for the Arts, Delta County Libraries, and the Paradise Theater present the inaugural “PAONIA READS,” encouraging all Paonia adults and high school students to enjoy Sherman Alexie’s “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” during the months of December and January. After reading the book, join your fellow Paonians for a free showing of the film based on Alexei’s story collection. The film will air on January 28 at 2pm at the Paradise Theater, followed by a lively discussion and snacks.
The Boston Globe wrote of the twenty four linked tales: “Alexie’s prose startles and dazzles with unexpected, impossible-to-anticipate moves. These are cultural love stories, and we laugh on every page with a fist tight around our hearts.” The collection, originally published in 1993, received a Special Citation for the PEN/Hemingway Special Citation Award for Best First Fiction. Alexei also wrote the screenplay for an independent film released in 1998, described as a “humorous yet serious story about Victor, a young man who director Chris Eyre describes as ‘trying to forgive his father.’ The movie gives us a glimpse into the contemporary Native American world, and is created by an almost exclusively Native American cast.”
PAONIA READS is a community collaboration that aims to spark conversation and inspire new perspectives. The book, described as “an instant classic,” is available for checkout at Paonia Library, with copies for teenagers at Paonia High School, along with “browsing copies” at local venues and as a Kindle book from Amazon. Join your neighbors: read the stories, watch the film, and discuss the issues. Just say NO to isolation!

The unavoidable movie synopsis — two young American Indians leave the reservation to resolve their problems and to find themselves — belies the poetry of this well-acted, well-directed and largehearted movie.
